misjudging

Getting it wrong

Misjudging is forming an incorrect assessment of something—a situation, a person's character, or the difficulty of a task.

The error can run in either direction: you might misjudge someone as trustworthy when they're not, or underestimate someone capable.

She felt she had been misjudging him all along.
