misjudging distance

Estimating space poorly

Misjudging distance is incorrectly estimating how far away something is.

The phrase usually describes spatial errors—reaching for a glass and knocking it over, or rear-ending the car ahead.

It extends to temporal distances: I misjudged the distance to the deadline and ran out of time.

The error can go either direction—thinking something closer or farther than it actually is.
