defense treaty
Mutual protection agreement
A defense treaty is a formal agreement between nations to provide mutual military support if one is attacked.
Such treaties form the backbone of international security alliances: NATO members are bound by a defense treaty obligating collective response to aggression against any member.
The defense treaty committed both countries to treating an attack on one as an attack on both.
