microforms

Tiny archived images

Microforms are photographic reproductions of documents at greatly reduced size, requiring magnification to read.

The term covers microfilm (images on a continuous roll) and microfiche (images arranged in a grid on a flat sheet).

Libraries once relied heavily on microforms to preserve newspapers and archival materials in compact form: The old newspapers are only available on microforms in the basement.
