methylated spirits

Toxic cleaning solvent

Methylated spirits is denatured alcohol—ethanol mixed with methanol and other additives to make it undrinkable and thus exempt from liquor taxes.

Used as a solvent, fuel for camp stoves, and cleaning agent.

Also called methylated spirit or simply meths.

The term is more common in British, Australian, and South African English than American.
