mercury barometer
Atmospheric pressure measurer
A mercury barometer is an instrument that measures atmospheric pressure using a glass tube filled with mercury.
The tube is inverted into a mercury reservoir; air pressure pushing on the reservoir supports the mercury column, whose height indicates the pressure.
Standard atmospheric pressure holds the column at about 760 millimeters.
Changes in mercury height predict weather: rising pressure suggests fair conditions, falling pressure indicates storms approaching.
