melodeons

Small portable organs

Melodeons are small reed organs, popular in the 19th century, where air is pumped through metal reeds by foot-operated bellows.

The term also refers to a type of button accordion, particularly the diatonic kind used in folk music.

In American history, melodeons were common parlor instruments before pianos became affordable: She played hymns on the old melodeon.
