megrim

Whim or headache

Megrim has two main threads.

One is a severe headache, especially migraine—an old-fashioned medical term now rarely used except in historical contexts.

The other, usually plural, refers to low spirits or a fit of depression: She's having one of her megrims.

This second sense carries a faintly dismissive tone, suggesting the mood is theatrical or self-indulgent.

In fishing, a megrim is a type of flatfish.
