medieval libraries
Cloistered manuscript collections
Medieval libraries were collections of books and manuscripts housed in monasteries, cathedrals, universities, and royal courts during the Middle Ages.
Unlike modern lending libraries, they served primarily to preserve texts—often religious works, classical philosophy, and scientific treatises copied by hand.
Books were frequently chained to reading desks to prevent theft.
The monastic scriptoria attached to these libraries produced the manuscript copies that transmitted ancient knowledge to later centuries.
