Duns Scotus

Medieval Franciscan philosopher

Duns Scotus was a medieval Scottish philosopher and theologian (c. 1266–1308), a Franciscan friar whose subtle arguments earned him the title "Doctor Subtilis." His followers, called Dunsmen or Dunces, were later mocked by Renaissance humanists as hair-splitting opponents of new learning—giving English the word dunce.
