lending libraries
Loaner book repositories
Lending libraries are libraries that loan books and other materials to members, typically for free or a small fee.
The term distinguishes them from reference libraries, where materials must be used on-site.
Public libraries are the most common type, though private lending libraries—sometimes called circulating libraries—were important before public systems developed.
