martins
Fork-tailed flying hunters
Martins are swallows—small, agile birds known for their aerial acrobatics and insect-catching flight.
The purple martin is the largest North American swallow, prized for mosquito control; people erect multi-unit birdhouses to attract colonies.
House martins build mud nests under eaves across Europe and Asia.
The martins returned to the gourd houses in early spring.
