market indices
Exchange performance trackers
Market indices are statistical measures that track the performance of a group of stocks, bonds, or other securities, giving investors a snapshot of how a particular market or sector is doing.
Common examples include the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, which reflect the health of the U.S. stock market.
When people say the market is up, they're usually referring to one of these indices.
The singular form is market index.
