marching cubes

Isosurface extraction algorithm

Marching cubes is a computer graphics algorithm that extracts a polygonal mesh from a three-dimensional scalar field—essentially converting volumetric data like MRI scans or terrain maps into visible surfaces.

The algorithm examines cubes of adjacent data points, determining where a surface passes through based on threshold values, then connects these fragments into a continuous mesh.

The medical imaging software uses marching cubes to render organs from CT data.
