mangers

Stable feeding containers

A manger is a trough or open box in a stable or barn from which horses, cattle, and other livestock eat hay or grain.

The word appears most famously in Christmas imagery, where the infant Jesus is said to have been laid in a manger because there was no room at the inn.

The horses fed quietly from the wooden manger.
