stable doors

Horse barn gates

Stable doors are doors divided horizontally into two independently opening halves, allowing the top to remain open for light and air while the bottom stays closed to contain animals.

Common on barns and stables, they've become popular in homes as a rustic design element.

The idiom closing the stable door after the horse has bolted describes taking precautions too late—only securing things after the damage is done.
