major penalty
Five-minute box stay
A major penalty is a severe infraction in ice hockey, resulting in five minutes in the penalty box—compared to two minutes for a minor penalty.
Major penalties are assessed for dangerous or violent play: fighting, boarding, or hits that draw blood.
The offending player must serve the full five minutes regardless of whether the opposing team scores.
