madrasahs

Muslim religious schools

Madrasahs are Islamic educational institutions, ranging from elementary schools teaching basic literacy and Quranic recitation to advanced academies of Islamic law and theology.

The word is Arabic for "school." In Western media, madrasah often carries connotations of religious extremism, though most are simply parochial schools: He attended a madrasah before going to university.

Also spelled madrasa, madrassah, or madrassa.
