macerations

Prolonged liquid soakings

Macerations is the plural of maceration, the process of softening or breaking down something by soaking it in liquid.

In cooking, fruit macerates in sugar or alcohol to release juices and absorb flavor: The strawberry macerations sat overnight before being added to the dessert.

In winemaking, grape skin maceration extracts color and tannins.

The term also applies to skin softened by prolonged moisture exposure, as when bandages stay wet too long.
