punch down
Collapse risen bread
Punch down has two distinct meanings.
In bread-making, to punch down is to deflate risen dough by pressing it with your fist, releasing gas bubbles before a second rise: Punch down the dough and let it rise again.
In social commentary, to punch down is to direct humor or criticism at people with less power or privilege than yourself—the opposite of punching up at authority.
Comedy that punches down at the vulnerable isn't clever, it's cruel.
