lynched

Executed without trial

Lynched is the past tense of lynch, meaning to kill someone by mob action without legal authority—historically by hanging.

The term is most associated with the extrajudicial murder of Black Americans, particularly in the South from Reconstruction through the mid-20th century: Between 1877 and 1950, thousands of Black men were lynched.

The word sometimes extends to any mob killing or vigilante execution.
