livery stables
Equine rental facility
Livery stables were establishments that housed horses for paying customers, offering boarding, feeding, and care.
Before automobiles, they served travelers needing temporary stabling and locals who kept horses but lacked their own facilities.
Livery stables also rented horses and carriages: We hired a rig from the livery stable.
The term is now historical, though some equestrian facilities still use the name.
