coaching inns
Stagecoach rest stops
Coaching inns were roadside establishments in Britain and colonial America that served stagecoach travelers, providing food, lodging, and fresh horses.
They were spaced a day's journey apart along major routes and typically featured large courtyards where coaches could turn around.
The rise of railways in the mid-nineteenth century made them obsolete, though many survive as pubs or hotels.
