legitimate theatre
Actors performing onstage
Legitimate theatre refers to live dramatic performances—plays, musicals, and similar productions staged before an audience, as distinguished from film, television, radio, or recorded entertainment.
The term emerged when theater managers needed to differentiate serious drama from vaudeville, burlesque, and other variety entertainment.
Today it often simply means Broadway-style productions: She left television to return to legitimate theatre.
