leg traps
Spring-loaded hunting devices
Leg traps are devices designed to catch animals by clamping onto their legs.
Steel-jawed leg traps snap shut when an animal steps on the trigger plate, holding the creature until a trapper returns.
Critics call them inhumane because trapped animals may suffer for hours or chew off their own limbs to escape.
Some jurisdictions have banned or restricted their use: The state outlawed leg traps for fur harvesting.
