latching on

Seizing and holding

Latching on describes the act of firmly attaching or gripping onto something.

A baby latches on to the breast when nursing.

Figuratively, to latch on is to grasp an idea or seize an opportunity: She latched on to the concept immediately.

It can also mean attaching oneself to a person, often unwelcomely: He latched on to us at the party and wouldn't leave.
