lap swimmer
Back-and-forth stroker
A lap swimmer is someone who swims back and forth across a pool for exercise, as opposed to recreational splashing or water aerobics.
The term distinguishes serious swimmers from casual pool users: The lap swimmers had the pool to themselves during early morning hours.
Lap swimming typically happens in designated lanes.
