lake-effect

Water-induced snow phenomenon

Lake-effect describes weather phenomena caused when cold air passes over a large, relatively warm lake and picks up moisture.

The term appears most often with snow: lake-effect snow falls heavily on areas downwind of the Great Lakes, sometimes burying cities like Buffalo under several feet while nearby areas remain clear.
