kneecappings
Vigilante leg attacks
Kneecappings are acts of shooting or otherwise destroying someone's kneecaps as punishment or intimidation.
The practice became associated with paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, used against suspected informers or criminals: The IRA carried out dozens of kneecappings in Belfast.
The term extends to any deliberate crippling attack on the knees.
