keep-away

Childhood ball game

Keep-away is a children's game where two or more players toss an object back and forth while trying to prevent another player from catching it.

The excluded player chases the ball or toy, attempting to intercept it while the others keep it just out of reach.

Beyond the playground, keep-away describes any situation where something is deliberately withheld: The documents have been in a game of keep-away with investigators for months.
