karabiners

Metal climbing links

Karabiners are metal clips with spring-loaded gates, used in climbing, mountaineering, and rope work to quickly connect components.

The D-shaped or oval loop snaps open to receive a rope or anchor point, then closes securely.

Also spelled carabiners.

Beyond climbing, they appear on keychains and gear loops: I clipped my water bottle to my pack with a karabiner.
