justiciary

High legal officer

Justiciary refers to the administration of justice or to a judge or other officer administering it.

In Scottish law, the High Court of Justiciary is the supreme criminal court.

Historically, a justiciary was a high judicial officer, particularly in medieval England where the chief justiciary governed in the king's absence.

The term is largely confined to legal and historical contexts.
