jury-rigging

Emergency temporary fix

Jury-rigging is improvising a temporary repair or solution using whatever materials are available.

The term comes from nautical use—a jury mast or jury rig was an emergency replacement assembled at sea when the original was damaged.

The practice extends to any makeshift fix: Some jury-rigging got the car running long enough to reach a mechanic.

The verb is jury-rig; the adjective is jury-rigged.
