joint position sense

Body position perception

Joint position sense is the body's ability to perceive where a limb or body part is in space without looking at it.

This unconscious awareness, also called proprioception, lets you touch your nose with your eyes closed or know that your arm is raised.

Damage to nerves or the brain can impair joint position sense, causing clumsiness or difficulty with movement: The neurologist tested her joint position sense by moving her toe up or down while her eyes were closed.
