deafferentation
Input pathway severance
Deafferentation is the loss or interruption of sensory nerve input to the central nervous system.
When afferent nerves—those carrying signals from the body to the brain—are damaged or severed, the affected area loses sensation.
The term appears in medical and neuroscience contexts: deafferentation pain, deafferentation syndrome.
Phantom limb sensations arise partly from deafferentation of the missing limb's neural pathways.
