joint custody

Split parental responsibility

Joint custody is a legal arrangement in which divorced or separated parents share responsibility for raising their children.

Physical custody determines where the child lives; legal custody covers decisions about education, healthcare, and upbringing.

Courts may award joint custody of both types, or split them: They have joint legal custody, but the mother has primary physical custody.
