state custody
Official protective care
State custody is the legal condition of being under government control and supervision.
It applies most often to children removed from their homes by child protective services, or to individuals held by law enforcement or corrections: The children were placed in state custody after the abuse allegations.
A person in state custody has limited autonomy—the state assumes responsibility for their care, confinement, or both.
