jersey retirement
Number goes up
Jersey retirement is a sports honor in which a team permanently removes a player's uniform number from circulation, reserving it exclusively for that individual.
The retired number is typically displayed in the team's arena or stadium: The franchise retired his jersey in a ceremony at halftime.
The practice recognizes exceptional players or, occasionally, coaches and other figures significant to the organization.
