jemmy

Short prying bar

A jemmy is a short crowbar used to force open doors, windows, or locks—the burglar's traditional tool.

The word is primarily British; Americans say jimmy.

As a verb, to jemmy something is to pry it open: Someone had jemmied the back door.

Also spelled jimmy in British usage.
