jack-o'-lantern
Glowing gourd face
A jack-o'-lantern is a pumpkin carved with a face and lit from within by a candle, displayed at Halloween.
The name comes from an old term for a mysterious light seen at night over marshes—what scientists call ignis fatuus or will-o'-the-wisp.
The carved pumpkin tradition is American, though it draws on older European customs of carving turnips and gourds.
The kids spent all afternoon making jack-o'-lanterns.
