internalizations

Making beliefs yours

Internalizations are instances of absorbing external ideas, values, or standards until they become part of one's own thinking.

In psychology, the term describes how children internalize parental rules or how people adopt cultural norms as personal beliefs: Years of criticism led to internalizations of shame that persisted into adulthood.

The word often appears in discussions of how social expectations become inner voices.
