informing

Passing on facts

Informing is the act of giving someone information or knowledge: Thanks for informing me of the change.

It also means serving as an animating principle or influence: the values informing her work.

A darker sense is reporting someone to authorities, especially secretly: He was informing on his neighbors to the police.

An informant informs in this last sense.
