hurdy gurdy
Wheel-bowed strings
A hurdy gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound through a hand-cranked wheel rubbing against the strings, while keys pressed with the other hand change the pitch.
The droning, mechanical sound was common in medieval European street music.
The term sometimes loosely refers to a barrel organ or any hand-cranked instrument played by street musicians.
