horcruxes

Dark immortality vessels

Horcruxes is the plural of horcrux, a term from the Harry Potter series for objects containing fragments of a dark wizard's soul.

Creating one requires murder and dark magic; destroying all horcruxes makes the creator mortal again.

The word has entered broader usage for anything someone has invested deeply in or can't let go of: My journals are my horcruxes.
