hoopskirts

Victorian dress frames

Hoopskirts are wide skirts held out by a framework of hoops—typically made of whalebone, wire, or crinoline—worn underneath.

Popular in the mid-19th century, they created the bell-shaped silhouette of the antebellum South and Victorian era.

The term now evokes period costume dramas and historical reenactments: She could barely fit through the doorway in her hoopskirt.
