file extensions
Filename ending indicators
File extensions are the suffixes at the end of computer filenames, typically three or four characters following a period: .txt, .pdf, .jpg, .docx.
They indicate the file type and help operating systems determine which program should open the file.
I couldn't open the attachment because I didn't recognize the file extension.
Some systems hide extensions by default, which can obscure a file's true nature—a security concern when malicious files masquerade as harmless ones.
