holy trinity
Indispensable trio concept
A holy trinity is any group of three closely related elements considered essential or foundational to something: the holy trinity of French cooking: butter, cream, and wine, the holy trinity of rock: sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
The phrase borrows religious weight to emphasize how fundamental the three components are to whatever domain is being discussed.
In Louisiana cooking, the holy trinity specifically means onions, celery, and bell peppers—the aromatic base for Cajun and Creole dishes. (Capitalized Holy Trinity is the Christian theological concept.)
