hoar frost

Frozen morning dew

Hoar frost is the feathery white ice crystals that form on cold surfaces—grass, leaves, windowpanes—when water vapor freezes directly from the air.

Unlike ordinary frost, hoar frost grows in delicate, needle-like formations that catch light.

The *hoar* is an old word meaning gray or white with age, as in *hoary*: The fields were covered in hoar frost that morning.
