hit parades
Popular music lists
A hit parade is a ranked list of popular songs, typically ordered by sales or radio play.
The term dates from the mid-20th century when such charts were broadcast on radio programs and published in music magazines.
Though largely replaced by terms like "charts" or "top 40," hit parade survives in figurative use for any ranking of popular or successful items: The new restaurant quickly climbed the local hit parade.
