hippopotamuses

Massive African wallowers

Hippopotamuses are large, barrel-bodied mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa, spending much of their time submerged in rivers and lakes.

Despite their docile appearance, they are among the most dangerous animals on the continent.

The singular is hippopotamus, often shortened to hippo; the plural may also be hippopotami.
